On Monday, Sheri and I went to the Commodore where DJ Tiësto spinned. Tiësto is one of the worlds best DJ’s and he’s Dutch (of course). My iPod is 80% filled with Tiësto sets and it was incredible to see him live. He is incredibly skilled at transitioning one song into another to create a non-stop 3 hour track. And through the selection of his tracks and his stage personality, he can manipulate the crowd and take you on a 3 hour dance experience.
Sheri and I aren’t exactly the trance crowd and at least 90% of the crowd was 10 years younger than me. There wasn’t a lot of pushing and shuffing so we could both get very close to the front. Everybody also brought cameras and there was an ocean of cameras all around us. It didn’t take me very long to find myself and Sheri on one of the pictures people have posted on the internet. There’s also a video if you’re interested. I hope he comes back to Vancouver soon.
This picture is me last Sunday on the left, and me in 1991 on the right, definitely proving I gained weight, but my style is still gracious (ahum). After a five year hiatus, I joined a soccer team again. Last Sunday, we played our first game. I also ran 10K in the Sun Run on the same day, very unfortunate timing. I play in a team called “Western United” as right back, a position I’ve never played before. It went pretty good. I’ve realized I’ve traded speed for intelligence. I used to just run to the other goal, now I actually think about what I’m doing. I don’t know what’s better. I’ll let you know.
Last year, I spend a month in Nepal. I’ve met a lot of people there and I’ve stayed in contact with a few of them via email. The situation was bad back then, and I was very worried the last weeks during the protests that often ended in violence. It seems that the efforts have payed off for the Nepali. One of my friends sent us this email.

Here’s an email I received today, from another friend in Nepal:
I spent two days in Beverly Hills this week. I was invited on a panel at the Canada Media Marketplace to share some of our blogging experience on HelloBCBlogs.com. It was my fist stay in LA and beside the fact that it was raining, I noticed that a large number of people were walking/driving around with a blue-tooth device clipped at their ear that connects to their cell phone. I also found it strange that there were virtually no shoppers on Rodeo drive, although the weather might have had something to do with it.
Visiting a new city also gave me a chance to test Google Local for mobiles. Bell gave me a Blackberry 7130e with EVDO capabilities to try out for a few weeks. So I used the driving directions to walk from my hotel to to the conference. Very nice. When they manage to connect it with GPS or another location service, it’s a killer app. I also tried to post a blog while sitting in a Thai restaurant. It took me 20 minutes to type an entry only to realize that it wouldn’t save because of a browser limitation.
On the second day I had a few hours before heading back to Vancouver so I visited the Getty Centre. I was very impressed with the architecture of the building and gardens and their art collection of classic European art is very impressive. Any day I can see a van Gogh is a good day. It’s funny how a lot of people I talk to tell me they like the gardens as much as the art. I’m sorry but no garden can ever beat looking at a van Gogh, a Renoir, a Cézanne, a Manet, a Degas, a Monet or Millet.

Troy, my brother in law, made this picture of me a couple of years ago and I posted it on my blog. Soon after, it showed up on the first page for a Google image search for snowboarding, and almost #1 for snowboard jump. So two of the highest entry keywords for my blogs are these two keywords. Next, a few kids used the image to dress up their page on myspace. Then myspace became the social network of choice and now the picture of me taking a jump on my snowboard has spread all over myspace to the point where the picture gets accessed almost 10,000 times a day. That’s 3.5 Million times a year. Now THAT’S funny. And kinda flattering to. I wonder if these kids know it was a 34 year old who was holding his breath and hoping he wasn’t going to break every bone in his body. But I did land the jump. Some of these myspace pages are pretty funny. Well, I didn’t intent my last post to be THAT dramatic. I took a 4 month break in blogging. Not voluntarily I have to add so there wasn’t much re-inventing happening. A long string of hosting issues and not enough time to deal with it was the main reason why I didn’t post anything. But I’m back with a new URL Wilhelmus.ca is a bit more representative than the old WilliamsWeekly since my blog wasn’t really a weekly thing anymore. It does provide me with the inspiration to rethink and re-invent (myself).

….. the front page of a newspaper is completely covered with the olympic selections of the Canadian hockey teams. Of course the rest of the world doesn’t give a rats ass about hockey, so please stop bugging me about speed skating, the only sport that matters during the winter olympics. And HELLO, does anybody know we’re in the middle of an election campaign?
