5 ways when QR codes make sense and don’t

I’ve never understood the hype around QR codes. They’re just a fancy URL shortener but instead of typing in a URL, you need to download an app, open the app and position it in order to open a web browser and be directed to a web page. Seems like a lot of work for little payoff. It reminds me of the Cue Cat.

I can’t say I’ve used QR codes a lot. I see them everywhere but not once have I felt compelled to whip out my smartphone and use it. I’ve never seen anybody scanning anything either (except in Japan 3 years ago).
